Born and raised in the vibrant streets of Soweto, Mawela Moses Sethako—professionally known as Biko
King—was immersed in music from a young age. Growing up in the township of Tladi, he spent Sundays
surrounded by live jazz at Timmy’s corner shop, where local musicians created soulful moments that left a
lasting impression on him. Those early experiences instilled in him a deep appreciation for live
performance, improvisation, and the emotional power of music.
His musical influences are deeply rooted in his family and heritage. His father, a passionate music lover and
vinyl collector, introduced him to legends like Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela, Pharoah Sanders, Salif Keita, and
Jabu Khanyile. The warm tones of African jazz and the rich storytelling in their music became a cornerstone
of his own creative vision. Meanwhile, his older brother introduced him to the world of hip-hop, with icons
such as Nas, Pharrell, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., and Wu-Tang Clan shaping his musical palette. This blend of
African rhythms and global urban sounds sparked a lifelong curiosity to explore genre-crossing music.
Biko King’s sound is a fusion of Afrobeat, jazz, deep house, and world music, characterized by meaningful
lyrics, substance, and artistic integrity. He approaches music not as a trend, but as a reflection of his mood,

His career highlights include collaborations with GP Gangsta, the renowned Kwaito rap group from Soweto
—producing their hit “Brown Bottle”—and German rap legend Azad on the track “Money,” featuring Yustinez
and Dardan. The track has amassed over 4 million streams and was featured in a critically acclaimed
documentary in Germany, further cementing his international presence.
